Spice-rubbed Top Sirloin with Cucumber Salad

If you’re anything like me, when you get home from work, the last thing you feel like doing is an hour worth of prep before you can eat. That’s why I always make sure to take out a protein before I leave for work in the morning so I don’t have to wait for it to defrost once I get home. That leaves one problem however… no time to marinate! But don’t worry, I have the solution for when you want a juicy, tender and flavorful steak minus the marinade, a spice rub! You can make any mixture that suits your tastes or the particular dish and pack it on the steak. This will lock in the moisture and add a nice kick to your average meal. Today I decided to make a somewhat spicy rub with smoked paprika and chili powder as the dominant flavors. Just make sure to either cook this on the grill outside or to open all the windows in your house because a spice rub tends to smoke.

I like to make it extra fancy by slicing the sirloin on a diagonal and remember that cutting it against the grain is a must in ensuring a tender bite. Also, as a little something extra, once it’s done cooking I like to let it rest for about ten minutes under some foil. Once that is finished, I like to pour the accumulated juices overtop the steak prior to serving. Yum! I decided to pair this smokey and slightly spicy steak with a cooling cucumber salad seasoned with fresh dill, garlic and some salt and pepper. Now that’s a winning combination!
